Fragocastello is the location of a castle and scattered settlement on the south coast of Crete.
The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-74 to impose order on the rebellious Sfakia region, to deter pirates, and to protect Venetian nobles and their properties.
The castle is widely known not only for the golden sandy beach above which it dominates, but also for the urban legends which accompany it.
The urban legends about the main castle are connected with the battle of 17 May 1828 A.D. between the besieged Cretan army, of Hatzi-Michali Ntaliani and Strati Delligiannaki and the Turkish conquers, with result the defeat of Cretans.
Drosoulites, as are named the shades that appear to occupy the castle before the sun-raising the second half of May, are the ghosts of Cretan Army that fell in the battle against Turks.
